An Open Letter to Automotive Designers

I'm also sending a version of this letter to major automotive manufacturers. Will it make a difference? Maybe not. But all they can do is say no — so why not try?

Dear Automotive Design Teams,
First, I want to thank you for the work you do. The blend of form, function, and innovation that goes into designing modern vehicles is nothing short of remarkable — and I know it's no small task to balance engineering, safety, and driver experience across so many vehicle types.
That’s why I’m reaching out today with a humble request on behalf of a growing community of adaptive drivers and individuals who rely on pedal extension systems in order to drive safely and confidently.
Over the past several years, I’ve been developing a new system of tool-free, adjustable pedal extensions designed specifically for short-statured drivers. One of the most persistent challenges we encounter isn’t safety compliance — it’s inconsistency.
Some pedals are wide and flat. Others have thick, molded overhangs. Many include unexpected protrusions or metal lips along the back or sides — often unnoticed until you're trying to adapt them. These small design variations can make it difficult to safely and securely attach adaptive equipment.
I’ve spent hundreds of hours trying to account for every variable, but it’s nearly impossible to predict what’s coming next. And in the end, an entire community can be left frustrated by what are otherwise excellent vehicles.
I’m not asking for radical redesigns. But if your team ever has the opportunity to consider more standardized, consistent geometry in pedal shape and rear surface clearance, I can assure you it would make a world of difference for thousands of adaptive drivers — and the engineers/designers like myself who build adaptive equipment for them.
Thank you for your time, your consideration, and your continued commitment to inclusive, intelligent design. If you'd like to see how we're solving this challenge from the adaptive side, I’d be more than happy to share.
Warmly,
Dave Kendall
